New Hobbies.

Hey guys!

Excuse me for I am about to be incredibly politically incorrect, but I am what I (and only I as I just made it up) call a hobby hoe.

That is, I am constantly scouring the internet for ideas for new hobbies and activities to occupy myself with, but things like knitting, cross stitching and painting have never really floated my boat as I am not creative.

Seriously. My main artistic achievement happened this past weekend when I was studying with AFA and successfully drew a stickman doing a jump squat. And even then, my stickman grew in height while doing his exercise.

You think I’m joking but I’m still super proud of this.

I have tried over the years to get good at things, but apart from stringing words together and writing (I hope anyway) and successfully writing in my journal now every single night since September, I’m just no good at making things stick.

However, my darling father gave me a camera not that long ago (sorry not sorry, he gave me the one he originally bought for his partner, but she didn’t use it so wheeeeyyy now it’s mine), and in the last few weeks, I’ve started to try and take in my surroundings – especially being in a country that is not my own-, playing about with the settings on the camera, and have come to find I really enjoy taking little snapshots of things.

I’ve got a Polaroid camera, which I use a lot, and snap photos all the time on my phone, however, there’s something a little bit more different when you successfully navigate how to take a photograph of a skyline at nighttime and it coming out as more than a black backdrop with two or three dots as the twinkly lights. Or take a photo of your back garden and have it ‘post-card worthy’. (Mr OneBigStressball’s words, not mine.)

So, I’m going to really try at this one.

It’s already December, so a bit early to start any major projects, but I don’t believe in making New Year’s Resolutions because a) why wait till New Year to do anything new? and b) It sets me up for failure and disappointment when I ultimately stray from my goals.

So before New Year, I’m going to participate in week long challenges to see if I can stick with the habit of using my camera 7 days at a time, and then afterwards, if I’m successful, I’ll start a project365 in the new year. That is, for a whole year, I will take one photo every day in response to a prompt on a special calendar.

Fingers crossed!

Ps, I also am trying to give up chocolates. I am on day 2 right now so let’s see how long I can keep this one up for.

pps, the featured photo on this post is one I took myself. Don’t ask the type of flower, I only know they are pink and that they exist on my porch.

ppps, Don’t laugh at Steve my squat-jumping stickman. I am extremely proud of him and the fact that it only took me one go is something I will never let go of.

  1. Your stickman is amazing! I honestly stared at it for a solid minute in awe. I’m also artistically challenged so I understand the struggle. By the way, we draw our arrows the same way – the line doesn’t land right in the middle of the arrow part. Yeah I saw it haha
